Separate stems without uploading your songs: the local alternative
2 min read · Updated
To isolate a vocal or make an instrumental, two families of tools coexist: online services, which process the file on their servers, and tools that compute on your own computer. Here is what really sets them apart, without bias, and where NAUPLY Stems, coming soon, fits in.
In short
- Online services: nothing to install, but the song goes to someone's servers.
- Local tools: the song stays on your machine, but you need a reasonably powerful computer.
- As a plugin, separation happens right inside your DAW project.
- Quality depends mostly on the model and the source, whatever the tool.
Online or local: the real difference
Services such as Moises or LALAL.AI work online: you upload the song, their servers separate it, you download the stems. It is convenient from any device with nothing to install, and the computing power is provided by the service.
Local tools compute on your computer. Ultimate Vocal Remover, for example, is a free, open-source application that separates stems offline. The benefit: your songs, often unreleased, never leave your machine, and nothing depends on a connection or a quota.
What a plugin in the DAW changes
NAUPLY Stems computes locally, like desktop applications, but inside your project: drop the song onto the plugin, separation runs in the background while you keep working, then balance, solo, lock the song to the project tempo and drag each stem onto a track.
It separates 4 to 10 stems depending on the mode (vocals, drums, bass, other, then guitar, piano and drum pieces), exports lossless 32-bit float WAV and caches songs it has already processed.
The limits, honestly
Computing locally needs a reasonably recent computer: a separation takes from a few seconds to a few minutes depending on the machine and mode. With NAUPLY Stems, the models are installed with the plugin: nothing is downloaded. An online service has none of these constraints.
NAUPLY Stems is announced as coming soon, on Mac; a PC version is planned next. No tool, online or local, gives back a track identical to the studio original: results depend mostly on the source quality and the model.
Going beyond separation
Once a song is separated, you can analyze its mix stem by stem. That is the idea behind Transplant Master, in development: it compares each stem of a reference with your tracks and suggests level, EQ, dynamics and width corrections.
How to choose
One-off need, on a phone or without installing anything: an online service is the simplest. Confidential songs, large volumes or working offline: a local tool. Regular work in the DAW, with tempo locking and drag-and-drop stems: a plugin such as NAUPLY Stems.
