Chord and melody generators: which approach to choose?
2 min read · Updated
MIDI composition helpers range from harmony assistants, which help you choose and play chords, to generators that suggest a complete idea. Here are the main approaches, without bias, and where MidiBrain, coming soon, fits in.
In short
- Harmony assistants: explore scales and chord progressions.
- Part generators: chords, bass and melody that fit together.
- MidiBrain generates 8 variations of a complete loop, played with its own sounds.
- The resulting MIDI can then be reworked like any other part.
The main families of tools
Plugins such as Scaler help explore scales and chord progressions, play them and transform them. Others, such as Captain Plugins, generate coordinated parts (chords, bass, melody) from a progression. Each has its own logic; many producers combine several.
MidiBrain's approach: a complete idea in one click
MidiBrain is an instrument: it needs no incoming notes. Pick a few tags (instrument, character, mood), the key, click GENERATE: it suggests 8 variations of a loop with chords, bass, melody, arpeggio and counter-melody, played with its own sounds.
Each part can be locked, transposed or regenerated; a big pad transforms the whole idea. The result goes to your DAW as MIDI (one track or one track per part) or as audio. A tutorial details every step.
After generation
Generated MIDI can be reworked like any part: Sutura cleans, humanizes or simplifies it non-destructively, and Groova applies the groove of a reference recording.
The limits, honestly
A generator suggests starting points: it does not replace your choices. Harmony assistants give more note-by-note theoretical control, whereas MidiBrain favours speed and the complete idea. MidiBrain is announced as coming soon, as VST3 and standalone; DAWs that do not accept VST3 use the standalone version and file drag-and-drop.
How to choose
You like building harmony chord by chord: a harmony assistant. You want a complete loop to hear right away and keep part by part: an idea generator such as MidiBrain. The two complement each other very well.
