Transcribe a separated stem to MIDI: bass, vocals, drums
2 min read · Updated
Turning audio into MIDI notes works well on a solo instrument, much less on a full mix where everything blends together. The solution: separate first, then transcribe each stem. Here is what this method gives you, and how to use it.
In short
- Separate the song to isolate the instrument you want to transcribe.
- Transcribe the separated stem, not the full mix.
- Drag the MIDI onto an instrument track in your project.
- Fix doubtful notes by ear.
Listen to a real separation
14 seconds of an original NAUPLY track. Switch stems while it plays: the position is kept.
Split by NAUPLY Stems for desktop into 4 stems, MEDIUM quality (Premium and Pro editions), untouched. Each stem is brought to the same loudness so you can compare by ear; MP3 128 kbps. Song and stems: NAUPLY's own material, no third-party song.
Why separate before transcribing
A transcriber looks for notes in a signal. On a full mix, the harmonics of the guitar, piano and vocals overlap: it invents notes or misses them. On a separated stem, the signal is much simpler, and the transcription much more reliable.
With NAUPLY Stems (Pro edition)
After separation, right-click a stem's name, choose “Transcribe to MIDI…”, then Alt + drag its name onto an instrument track in your music software: a MIDI file at the song's tempo, aligned with the start of the audio. Drums are transcribed as General MIDI notes: kick, snare, toms, hi-hat and cymbals.
You can then replay the bass line with your own synth, double a vocal melody with an instrument, or replace the sounds of a drum kit.
What works well, what needs fixing
Simple lines (one note at a time) transcribe best: bass, vocal melody, lead. Drums give a good rhythmic grid. Dense chords, slides, vibrato and very short notes need more corrections.
Think of the MIDI as a quick draft: it saves you most of the transcription work, and your ears do the rest.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you convert a whole song to MIDI?
- Not reliably in one go. It is better to separate the song into stems, then transcribe each stem: bass, vocals, drums.
- Which edition of NAUPLY Stems transcribes to MIDI?
- MIDI transcription of stems is part of the Pro edition.
- Are drums transcribed to MIDI?
- Yes, as General MIDI notes (kick, snare, toms, hi-hat, cymbals), to play with any drum instrument.
- Is the transcription accurate?
- It is a good base, not a guaranteed score: check fast notes, chords and slides by ear.
