EQ your mix like a reference track (match EQ)

2 min read · Updated

Does your mix sound duller or heavier than your reference tracks, without you knowing exactly where? A match EQ measures the spectral curve of a reference and that of your mix, then computes the EQ that brings one closer to the other. Used in moderation, it is an excellent starting point.

In short

  1. Choose a reference in the same genre, with similar instrumentation.
  2. Load the reference, then capture your own sound during playback.
  3. Set the amount of correction: rarely 100%.
  4. Preserve the low end to avoid phase issues.
  5. Compare at matched loudness before deciding.

What a match EQ does

It measures the average energy of each frequency band in the reference and in your sound, over a long enough period to smooth out variations. The difference between the two curves becomes an EQ: where your mix lacks highs compared with the reference, it adds them; where it is too heavy in the low mids, it takes them out.

The method with Calqua

Put Calqua on your mix bus or on a track. “LOAD REFERENCE” analyzes 15 to 30 s of a reference audio file. Start playing your song and click “CAPTURE MY SIGNAL”: Calqua listens to about 20 s of your signal. The matching filter is then computed.

Set the amount with AMOUNT (0% = no effect, 100% = full correction). MAX CORRECTION caps each band (12 dB safety limit), PRESERVE LOW END reduces the correction below 150 to 200 Hz, and AUTO GAIN compensates for the level increase so you can compare fairly.

Pitfalls to avoid

A reference from another genre gives an absurd correction: an acoustic song doesn't have the low end of an electronic track. Also pick a comparable passage: the reference's chorus against your chorus, not against your intro.

Full correction is rarely right: 30 to 60% is often enough. And a match EQ only matches the average tonal balance: it fixes neither a poor balance between instruments nor the dynamics.

Beyond the mix bus

On a single track, a match EQ brings one vocal take closer to another take recorded on a different day, or an instrument closer to a sound you like. Calqua's presets are sorted by use: mix bus, mastering, vocals, instruments, drums and bass.

Frequently asked questions

What is a match EQ?
An equalizer that compares your sound's spectrum with that of a reference and automatically computes the correction that brings them closer.
Should I apply 100% of the correction?
Rarely. 30 to 60% often gives a more natural result; always judge at matched loudness.
Does a match EQ replace mastering?
No. It corrects the average tonal balance, not the dynamics, the loudness or the balance between instruments.
Why preserve the low end?
Heavily correcting the deep lows can cause phase and mono compatibility issues. Reducing the correction below 150 to 200 Hz avoids that.
