An acapella locked to your project tempo
2 min read · Updated
Extracting the vocals from a song is only half of a remix: you then need to match them to your project tempo and place them in the right spot. When both steps happen in the same tool, you save a lot of time. Here is the method, with its limits.
In short
- Start from the best possible source and separate the vocals (2 stems are enough).
- Check the detected tempo and key.
- Lock the vocals to the project tempo (Pro edition).
- Export the locked vocal, which starts exactly at bar 1.
- Check the rights before releasing anything.
Listen to a real separation
14 seconds of an original NAUPLY track. Switch stems while it plays: the position is kept.
Split by NAUPLY Stems for desktop into 4 stems, MEDIUM quality (Premium and Pro editions), untouched. Each stem is brought to the same loudness so you can compare by ear; MP3 128 kbps. Song and stems: NAUPLY's own material, no third-party song.
Extract the vocals
With NAUPLY Stems, 2 stems (vocals and instrumental) are enough for an acapella; that is possible from the Free edition on. MEDIUM and MAXIMUM quality (Premium and Pro) give cleaner vocals, with less cymbal and reverb bleed.
Backing vocals and doubled vocals stay with the lead vocal: that is normal, the model separates “the vocals” from “everything else”.
Tempo and key
The plugin shows the song's tempo and key, with its DJ notation. Before locking, check that the detected tempo matches what you hear: a 140 BPM song can be read as 70, and vice versa.
For a mashup, key matters as much as tempo: two songs in neighboring keys blend well. Premium and Pro let you transpose a stem.
Lock to the project tempo
In the Pro edition, tempo lock fits the separated stems to the tempo of your session. “Export locked vocal” then writes a file named after the song and the tempo (for example MySong_Vocals_120bpm.wav), at the project sample rate, starting exactly at bar 1: just drop it at the start of an audio track.
The bigger the tempo gap, the more audible the stretching. A gap of a few BPM goes unnoticed; doubling or halving the tempo often sounds more natural than a large stretch.
Acapella rights
An extracted vocal remains the work of its authors and performers. Practicing remixing at home is private use; releasing a remix requires permission from the rights holders. Many artists provide official acapellas or run remix contests: that is the best source if you want to release something.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I get the acapella of a song?
- By separating it into 2 stems (vocals and instrumental) with a separation model. NAUPLY Stems does it on your computer, from the Free edition on.
- How do I match an acapella to my project?
- In the Pro edition, NAUPLY Stems locks the stems to the project tempo and exports the locked vocal as a file that starts at bar 1.
- Why is the detected tempo double the real one?
- Detection can confuse a tempo with its double or its half. Trust your ears: both readings are often musically valid.
- Can I release a remix made with an extracted acapella?
- Not without permission from the rights holders. Preferably use official acapellas or your own recordings.
