Repair a recording inside your DAW: the plugin alternative
2 min read · Updated
To clean up a damaged recording, many engineers use a complete restoration suite with its own editing application and modules. Another approach is to repair directly in the DAW, as inserts, with specialized plugins. Here are the differences, without bias, and where Repair AI and Clarea, coming soon, fit in.
In short
- A complete suite offers many tools and a dedicated editing application.
- Insert plugins repair without leaving the project, track by track.
- Local neural denoising processes voices without sending anything online.
- Either way: repair in the right order and listen to what is removed.
Complete suite or plugins in the DAW
Suites such as iZotope RX bring together many restoration modules and a dedicated spectral editing application, where you open a file to work on it in depth. It is a reference for post-production and heavy restoration.
The plugin approach works differently: repair happens as an insert, on the track, while the project plays. The session stays open, settings are saved with the project and you can revisit them at any time.
Repair AI: five repairs and spectral editing
Repair AI chains five modules in the recommended order (de-clip, de-click, de-hum, denoise, de-reverb), each able to play what it removes. Its spectral repair tab edits a clip (a file or a capture of playback) to erase a cough, a ring or a squeak, then sends the result back to the DAW.
Clarea: spoken voice, locally
For podcasts, voice-overs and interviews, Clarea chains six modules built for the voice, including neural-network denoising computed on your computer: the audio is not sent anywhere.
The limits, honestly
A complete suite offers more specialized tools and very advanced offline editing. Repair AI and Clarea have a fixed latency of about 100 ms, compensated by the DAW: they are mixing and post-production tools, not for live monitoring. They are announced as coming soon, on Mac.
No tool works miracles on badly damaged audio: pushing too far leaves artifacts, whatever the brand.
How to choose
Heavy restoration of many files, in-depth spectral editing outside the DAW: a complete suite. Everyday repairs while mixing, podcast or video voices to clean without leaving the session: specialized plugins such as Repair AI and Clarea.

- In what order should a recording be repaired?
- Clipping, then clicks, hum, background noise and finally reverb: the order Repair AI follows. Our "Clean up a recording" guide details the method.
- Are Repair AI and Clarea available?
- Not yet: they are announced as coming soon on Mac. You can ask to be notified from their pages.
